Instructional Plan / Lesson Plan: “Using a Menu at a Restaurant”
IEP Instructional Area: Community Ability Level: Developing
Target Population: Students with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (MMMI & MSMI) & Emotional Behavioral Disabilities.
This activity can be adapted in a variety of ways to teach students of all ages and ability levels.
Topic / Skill Outcome: understanding the use of a menu

Purpose of Lesson / Objective: Given a menu, the student will identify the prices of particular items.
They will then demonstrate the techniques of ordering a meal.
Materials / Equipment / Environment: Menus, worksheets, classroom, community restaurants.
Group Size: 2-8
Time Required: 45 minutes—three lessons (more if you do the supporting activities)
Lesson Procedure: Lesson one: The students and teacher will discuss what a menu is,
what information is on a menu, how items are categorized, and why restaurants have menus.
Lesson two: Using the attached worksheet, students will answer the questions using the menu on the worksheet.
Lesson three: Using different menus from local restaurants, write items to make a meal on index cards. The
students then use menus to locate and total the price of the suggested meal.
