Artistic Interpretation - Middle School

Objectives to Study:

Recommended Lessons

  • Analyze art works - This project will help students explore the relationship between life experiences and artist’s work. They will organize and record information presented and will apply specific criteria in the analysis process. This project will help you explore the relationship between life experience and an artist’s work. First, you will make observations and gather information about the works of a selected artist. Later, you will analyze how the artist worked over a period of time by observing pieces produced at different phases of the artist’s career.  That analysis, combined with information about the artist’s life and about the world within which the art was created, will help you ask and answer questions about the influence of particular kinds of life experiences.

      • Analyses of three artworks representative of diverse theories, historical eras, and techniques
         
  • Use art principles – Students view classify and describe many pieces of art using four art theories, formal, functional, expressive and imitative.  An art theory can be used as a lens through which to view and classify art works.  You will view, classify and describe many pieces of art through the lenses of four different art theories. You will be given copies of Sample Organize D on which to practice. When you and your teacher agree that you have sufficiently practiced doing this, you will evaluate three works of your selected artist using the same criteria.

      • Analyses of 20 miscellaneous artworks using information form the
        Diverse Art Theory Lenses.
      • Evidence of learning – Interpretation of three art works
         
  • Evaluate artwork – Students will describe their personal reactions to works of art. Either, write a paragraph on your personal response to the work of art.  What do you like and not like abut it?  How do you feel when you look at this picture?  Why?  Give your opinion about how personal experiences might shape artist intent.
    Support your statement with specific references to the art works. In addition to interpreting artwork. Critics make judgments about the overall quality and success of each art work or, prepare to present and theorist an interpretation of the art works that answers the question, How do personal life experiences affect an artist’s work?

      • Written Paragraph and/or
      • Oral presentation based on observation notes, notes from sources and analysis of three works
         
  • Explain the connection between the work of art an its social, cultural or historical context - Explain the connection between the work of art and its social, cultural, or historical context after considering the artists whose works you examine tasks A, B, and C. complete copies of Sample Organizer E.  Select one of the three and prepare a written summary or a collage report, which communicates an analysis of the way in which society, culture and history impacted the work of this artist.
