Purpose of Lesson / Objective:

  • Understand the importance of having a clean body
  • Learn the key parts of the body to wash
  • Learn about soaps, shampoos, and other personal care products

Materials / Equipment / Environment:

  • First Impressions Video Tape Series on hygiene
  • Samples of soaps, shampoos, deodorants, powders, and lotions
  • Doll with hair
  • Tub with warm water
  • Washcloth
  • Towels

Group Size: 3-5

Time Required: Will Vary

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Watch hygiene video from the First Impressions Video Tape Series
  2. Conduct a previewing and post viewing discussion on proper showering/bathing procedure (i.e., wash from top to bottom, use a dime size amount of shampoo, etc.)
  3. Discuss the key body areas to wash
  4. Have students demonstrate the proper bathing technique using a doll in a tub of warm water. (Have students verbalize the procedure as they perform it.)
  5. Discuss the importance of applying deodorants, lotions and powders after bathing

Carry Over / Related Activities:

  • Discuss or dramatize right and wrong methods of bathing
  • Have students keep a daily personal hygiene and grooming checklist

  • Discuss why people need to keep their bodies clean
  • Discuss student preferences for a shower or a bath
  • Let students dialog about how they feel about looking nice and smelling good
  • Have students dialog about how they feel if they are near someone who does not smell good
  • Have students share how often they bathe, and how they know when they need to bathe

Student Reaction / Evaluation:

  • Have students demonstrate proper bathing techniques using the doll
