Purpose of Lesson / Objective:

  • Kitchen utensils to be recognize and named
  • Two sets of flashcards - one set with the pictures of the appliances and utensils, and one set with the printed names of the appliances and utensils

Group Size: 4-6

Time Required: Will Vary - may be easier for students if done over several short time periods according to attention span of students

Lesson Procedure:

  1. In the kitchen area, walk around the kitchen naming and talking about the large appliances (refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave). Show the picture and name flashcards of that particular appliance as you talk.
  2. Introduce each kitchen utensil, placing the respective picture and name flashcards next to them
  3. Display the utensils and have the students match the picture flashcards to the actual utensils and appliances Students can also match the name flashcards to the objects, or picture flashcard to the respective name flashcard
  4. Ask students to give you, or point to, various utensils (Point to the colander Give me the spatula)
  5. Point to an appliance or hold up a utensil and ask students to identify the object

Carry Over / Related Activities:

  • Discuss and demonstrate the function(s) of each utensil. Have students physically demonstrate his/her knowledge of how to use the utensil, and/or quiz students by asking them what utensil they would use for a certain procedure. (Ex.: I need to drain the liquid from this can of beans. What utensil would I use?)
  • Present a simple recipe to students. Have students state what utensils need to be gathered in order to prepare the recipe Have students gather the needed utensils

Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:

  • Students who are nonverbal to use his/her Dynavox or other personal mode of communication - new vocabulary terms might need to be recorded

Strategies for Participation:

  • Display an array of kitchen utensils on a table in front of the students. Tell them you are going to bake chocolate chip cookies. From the utensils displayed in front of them, ask them to choose all the ones needed in order to make the cookies.

Student Reaction / Evaluation:

  • Have students complete a worksheet by writing names of the utensils next to a picture if it. Or have students match the picture or name flashcards with the correct utensil/appliance.
