Purpose of Lesson / Objective:
- Able to match pictures of 30 grocery items to the bakery, produce, cereal, meat and/or dairy section
Materials / Equipment / Environment:
- Large Poster Board Game with five sections labeled by aisle names with magazine
photos of items found in the aisles around the labels 30 grocery cards with actual product pictures pasted on to each card
Group Size: 4-6
Time Required: 50 minutes- 3 opportunities (more sessions needed if you do supporting activities)
Lesson Procedure:
- Week 1
- Students read the names of various products in the classroom
- Students play games such as logo solitaire
- Students cut out familiar product logos from ads
- Week 2
- Students match the product logo to the name of the products printed on note cards
- Students review product names in a group
- Students indicate logo when named by staff
- Week 3
- Students name the products on the worksheet to a staff
- Students draw lines on worksheet from product picture to name of product
- Students write in names of products next to the logo from ad
Carry Over / Related Activities:
- Student lists the aisle names the products would be found in next to the name of the product
Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:
- Go to the grocery store and show 3 or more logos of actual products on the shelves in that aisle
- Write a shopping list of products by aisles
- Point to the aisle in the store a favored item is found in
Strategies for Participation:
- Encourage students to get more matches each time they play the Shopping Aisle (what is this???) game
- Have students tell staff their favorite products so that those products can be used for matching to the correct aisle
Student Reaction / Evaluation:
- Students feel good about being able to match a large group of product names to the aisle in which they are located

Lesson Support:
- The lesson can be introduced as practice for future grocery trips
- Staff can use picture prompt cards from the Attainment Curriculum or homemade cards
- Staff can use ad logos from newspaper ads to make worksheets for matching the product to the aisle it is found in
- Staff can make aisle logos that students can past on their weekly community-shopping list
- This lesson aligns with the Grocery Shopping part of the Community Participation Integrated Learning Continuum and Skills Inventory
