Topic / Skill Outcome:

  • To scan a shelf and find a specific item or set of items

Learning Area(s):

  • Literacy
  • Communication

Purpose of Lesson / Objective:

  • Scan a store aisle and point to the item requested
  • Understand products are found in different parts of the store
  • Tell the difference between the item requested and other products

Materials / Equipment / Environment:

  • Several different products that would be found in a specific area of a store
  • Discount store located in the community and transportation to that store
  • Index cards with specific products pasted on them

Group Size: 4-6

Time Required: 50 minutes- 3 opportunities
(more sessions needed if you do supporting activities)

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Week 1
    • Students scan the products on the counter in the classroom and point to the product named or shown on an index card
  2. Week 2
    • Students go to the discount store and point to the product on the shelf in the discount store
  3. Week 3
    • Students bring an index card with the product on it and match it to the product on the shelf

Carry Over / Related Activities:

  • Student points to the products in the cabinets in the kitchen before using them
  • Student points to the product on the shelf of a different store

Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:

  • Go to the discount store and match a pictorial list of 3-4 products to actual products on the shelves
  • Point to the product before using it at school or home
  • Scan shelf and look in the direction of the product rather than point for student with physical limitations
  • Point to index card from selection of two cards with products when staff point to product on shelf

Strategies for Participation:

  • Prior to going into the community students will discuss what they are going to look for
  • Students can review in general terms where they might find their items.  For example, a student looking for socks should be able to tell that the socks won’t be found in hardware.

Student Reaction / Evaluation:

  • Students feel good about being able to find a large group of products

Lesson Support:

  • Students can play a teacher made General Shopping store game or homemade card game where they match products to the section of the discount store the products can be found in.
  • Students can improve their ability to differentiate groups of items (i.e., personal items from lawn and garden items) from doing a group activity where the students say yes or no to whether a product belongs in a certain section of the store
  • Students can improve their figure ground skills from finding items in the middle of other items
  • This lesson aligns with the General Shopping Part of the Community Participation Integrated Learning Continuum and Skills Inventory.
