Purpose of Lesson / Objective:

  • Awareness of sale items and coupons

Materials / Equipment / Environment:

  • Weekend ads and coupons from discount stores such as Target, Wal-Mart or K-Mart
  • Calculator
  • Writing pad
  • Scissors
  • Pen or pencil
  • Discount store located in the community
  • Transportation

Group Size: 4-5

Time Required: 50 minutes- 3 opportunities
(more sessions needed if you do supporting activities)

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Week 1
    • Students prepare a shopping list and estimate costs of items from Sunday store ads
    • Students cut out coupons and read expiration date and information both in large and small print on the coupons
  2. Week 2
    • Students compare and contrast prices for similar and dissimilar items
    • Students review which items tend to have discount coupons
  3. Week 3
    • Students go on a community trip and write down the prices for the items on their list
    • They note which items are sale items
    • They also note which items they have coupons for and what the regular price is versus the coupon price.

Carry Over / Related Activities:

  • The student can review ads and determine what is the better price

Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:

  • Students can eye point to the item they want from a selection of two coupons
  • Students can use picture cards to match to the coupons
  • Students can review coupons form similar items and determine which manufacturer’s have better discounts
