Purpose of Lesson / Objective:

  • Student will calculate a tip, given a service and a bill

  • Worksheets
  • Classroom
  • Trips to a restaurant
  • Pencils
  • Money

Group Size: 2-8

Time Required: 45 minutes - two lessons
(more if you do the supporting activities)

Lesson Procedure:

  1. Lesson one
    • Discuss what a tip is
    • What kid of service people get a tip
    • How much a tip is
  2. Lesson two
    • Using prices for various services, students will figure out a tip. These services can include haircuts, taxi rides, home food delivery and wait staff service in a restaurant.

Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:

  • Students could go on a class trip to a restaurant to use their tipping skills in the community
  • Students can also use the Internet to see menus from different restaurants
  • They can figure out how much a meal costs and how much to leave for a tip

Strategies for Participation:

  • Student can be reminded that they may have a job that requires a tip
