Purpose of Lesson / Objective:
- Students will identify the prices of particular items on a menu
- Students will demonstrate the techniques of ordering a meal
Materials / Equipment / Environment:
- Menus
- Worksheets
- Classroom
- Index Cards
- Menus from local restaurants
- Pencils
Group Size: 2-8
Time Required: 45 minutes - three lessons (more if you do the supporting activities)
Lesson Procedure:
- Lesson one:
- Discuss what a menu is
- What information is on a menu
- How items are categorized
- Why restaurants have menus
- Lesson two
- Using the attached worksheet, students will answer the questions using the menu on the worksheet
- Lesson three
- Using different menus from local restaurants, write items to make a meal on index cards
- The students then use menus to locate and total the price of the suggested meal
Carry Over / Related Activities:
Supporting Activities / Possible Adaptations:
- In class, students can take turns being waitpersons and customers
- Students could then go on a class trip to a restaurant to use their skills in the community
- Students can also use the Internet to see menus from different restaurants

Strategies for Participation:
- Students who are not motivated should be questioned to find out their preferred meals or food items

- Most students enjoy these activities since they can include their favorite restaurants, foods and meals
