- All students have the right to access the community and its resources, and to participate in meaningful activities.
- Development and instruction of community skills is a lifelong process. Acquisition of these skills will enhance the students’ independence, self-esteem and overall safety and quality of life.
- The role of the family / residence is critical to the success of the student and should be valued. Skill development should be coordinated between home, community, and school environments.
- Scope and sequence is a guide - instruction should be individualized and appropriate to the age of the child.
- Functional academics and appropriate behavior should be embedded within community instruction.
- Assessment / intervention should be on-going and should reflect the students’ needs with regard to their future transition to adulthood where the final outcome is the student utilizing available services and
accessing the community in which he/she lives.
